"Żywność Polska ~ Polish Food

It was Sunday in New York City. The perfect night of the week for a family style dinner, except this time I was flying solo. I was all ready to taste what Poland had to offer and easily settled on the restaurant called "Just Like Mother's" located at  11060 Queens Blvd., Forest Hills NY. The name seemed inviting enough and I could just picture a little old lady in the kitchen cooking me a traditional Polish dinner.
I arrived and followed the sign to seat myself. As usual, I found the most remote little corner and made myself comfortable. The restaurant was quaint with lit tea lights and a small vase of red flowers on the wooden table tops. An antique white stove caught my eye as it sat in the middle of the room, decorated with a large potted plant on top.

Soon after a friendly young waitress approached my table to take my order. I took the opportunity to explain to her why I was there and acquire her assistance in selecting the most authentic Polish grub on the menu.
She was happy to help and suggested that I have the Potato Pancakes for my appetizer. I love potatoes, and celebrate any occasion I get to have them fried.

Three golden cakes were set in front of me and the smell of fried potatoes and onions rose to greet me. The first bite revealed a well seasoned cake. Crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. This was almost perfection, except that it was a bit too oily. I actually used my napkin to soak up some of the excess. Not the most exciting start to the evening.

Next up was the Polish Platter. Boiled Pierogi (Meat, Cheese, Spinach), Fried Kielbasa, Boiled Potato, Stuffed Cabbage and Sauerkraut). The crowded plate was placed on my table and I felt like I needed a plan of action. "Taste the Pierogi first" said my inner voice, and I complied. The Meat Pierog was my first bite. The flavor was simple, but came alive when it was paired with the sauteed onions that garnished it. Next up was the Spinach Pierog and it was divine, full of flavor and texture. However, the Cheese Pierog was filled with classic American Sharp Cheddar and was uneventful.
The rest of the meal was as much a mixed bag as the beginning. Stuffed Cabbage held it's own, with a great beef filling that was a welcome change from the rest of the plate.
This dinner left me longing for the Polish food ( namely Tripe Soup) I had almost every day when I worked in Green Point Brooklyn. This time Queens did not represent as I'd hope it would.
For a homey dining room, prompt and friendly service but not so great food we give Just Like Mother's a C.
